Are We Not All Beggars?

This week one reading that stuck out to me was the talk from 2014 by Elder Holland, Are we not all beggars? I felt as if I was constantly being reminded of the Light the World program being put on by the Church this Christmas season. Elder Holland the Gospel of Luke: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and … set at liberty them that are bruised.” It made me think of how many people care so much more around this Christmas season, we think more about those around us who are poor in spirit or other aspects including finances. It made me think of my family's season of service, instead of presents we give acts of service during the year in the name of the person you are assigned. I was able to ponder my act of service as well as how we are all beggars, we all need prayer and God, just like he said.


  • Based on what you read in the first two pages (pages 3 and 4), why are virtue and integrity so vital to an economy? Truth and trust are needed in an economy otherwise with the lies there becomes cracks and the economy is changed, the reading related it to a crack in a piece of china, you can try to fix it but it will never quite be the same. 

  • According to Charles Handy, what is the “real justification” for the existence of businesses? "The purpose of a business, in other words, is not to make a profit, full stop. It is to make a profit so that the business can do something more or better. That 'something' becomes the real justification for the business. Owners know this. Investors needn’t care."

  • What are two solutions proposed by Handy that you agree with? Why?
    • "Business cannot always afford to be so generous to so many people, but doing good does not necessarily rule out making a reasonable profit. You can, for example, make money by serving the poor as well as the rich." I agree that not all business can be generous to so many people but that does not mean that all business can't help in a way in their community, it will bring more faith and hope to the community as well as share holders. It creates good publicity and positive reactions to see business helping those who need it.

Do what makes you happy.

This week what I got out of the readings was to do what makes me happy. I was intrigued by the amount of people talking about doing what you love and not doing a job that will make you unhappy even if you think it will only be for a little while. I think I often in the past have done things just for the money. I know that even if you hate the job but love the people you work with that it helps a lot. But I also think you need to like the company you work for as well. Right now I work as a personal assistant for my aunt. She tends to have me do the work she doesn't like to do. But I enjoy working for her and I like the kids most days. But I think a parent feels that way too. I just get paid for it. I don't mind shipping packages which is also what I do. And normally I love cooking. This week specifically has been hard because we are moving and my aunt and her husband are at Disney World right now. She left me with the kids and lots of moving. Lead

This week the reading, Leadership with a Small "L" by President Kim B. Clark was what stood out to me. I have a joke with my friends that lists make everything 85% more convincing. Because one, it gives people things to look at visually, two it gives them an order in which to accomplish things, and three you took the time to listen to me list off these three things and I seam suddenly more convincing. This quote from Kim B. Clark's talk teaches us to be like Christ but I think we need to be like him by preaching his gospel.  But in all seriousness, I really enjoyed the three principals of Lead by Example, Lead with Vision, and  Lead with Love. Leadership can be vital in the world today and as members of the church we are called to lead the world as examples. We are called to lead through His vision we must make it our own, we must understand that God has a plan for us, that doesn't mean we get it but we know it is there and we trust it. Dont give up

Something on my mind a lot this week was to not to give up. I thought a lot about how my interview went and how I am much like the person I interviewed, we both want to be inspirational soeakers and how when I told her that she kinda laughed sadly and said me too and I'm 53. It was sad that I  saw this woman as someone who was successful and yet she didnt feel like she was doing all she could. I want to be able to say whatever I do is me reaching my potential and that I am happy! These two quotes helped me as I thought about that this week.
